Re: What is Firefly? txt ~ link
Another fan here. I agree - it's a real shame that they cancelled the Firefly series, Onomir. I didn't know about it when it first came out, and now I've watched all 14 episodes (on DVD) - I want more! The same thing happened to the old Earth 2 series, which was cancelled after only 1 season, before...

Also a salute to the Professor, who began his stories in the trenches of WWI. Here is a link with some information:

Re: The wheel of time!
I agree with DoK on this. The first 4-5 books were great, but now Robert Jordan seems to be dragging the books out (maybe for more money?). It's a real shame - the story started out almost as an epic. In the last few books, I've gotten really annoyed with some of the characters, especially the femal...

Re: War is the province of all
Speaking strictly inside the parametres that Tolkien created for his own world, it's just genetics. The women that matter are all princesses or queens, and in Tolkien's world of continuous loss and degradation, where each generation is worse than the previous one, beauty is one of the effects - may...

Then Bard drew his bow-string to his ear. The dragon was circling back, flying low, and as he came the moon rose above the eastern shore and silvered his great wings...

Re: The Magic Mirror
Thanks for the discussion, Varda The role of women is of course, one of the biggest criticisms of Tolkien’s works, but I think his writing really just reflects the times that he lived in. He obviously had an idealized view of women – he puts them on a pedestal in LOTR. They excel in traditional fema...

I believe that's also the King's (Viggo's) birthday, except his was in 1958. Nice little coincidence!

Re: Bookfair theme - ideas needed
How about those Atomic Fireball candies? They are nice and hot and "dragonish". Other ideas - chocolate "coins" for treasure, or marbles for dragon's eyes. I have seen some wonderful pictures (posters) of Smaug painted by the Brothers Hildebrandt. That would cost money to buy, though. Just some idea...

Re: A pic of me...
I can't imagine living in those days, Lind. No wonder why "Ladies" had to have maids dress them. And how did they... uh ...uh....well, I guess that's why somebody invented the chamber pot. I guess I'll be daring and link a couple of pics. I don't have any recent ones, so these are from 1998-9...

Re: A pic of me...
That's really beautiful, Lind - you look like you just walked out of a medieval picture or movie. Have you thought about having an artist paint it? You could get yourself "Mona Lisa'ed" in oil as a permanent record.
