May 12 is National Limerick Day - so limericks!

Okay, I'm sure everyone is fully aware that May 12 is National Limerick Day. These often hilarious little ditties are really fun to write and often even more fun to read and hear. They can range from quite benign to very naughty. Since this is a child-friendly site, if you wish to participate please keep the poem in a Tolkien theme and G-rated.

The basic structure of a limerick is quite simple. It has five lines with the words at the end of each line rhyming in an aabba pattern. In other words, the first, second, and fifth lines rhyme and the third and fourth lines rhyme.

There is a little more to it than that, however, because each line usually has a sort of musical beat or rhythm. This beat is what gives the limerick its punch and what makes them difficult to write well. This beat goes something like:

bah-BAH bah-bah-BAH bah-bah-BAH
bah-BAH bah-bah-BAH bah-bah-BAH
bah-BAH bah-bah-BAH
bah-BAH bah-bah-BAH
bah-BAH bah-bah-BAH bah-bah-BAH

That's all there is to it and I'll start with a The Hobbit themed one.

There was a mad group from Bag End,
That was really quite hard to defend,
They needed a thief,
For some comic relief,
A dragon their intent to contend.

I've no doubt that Yarlindi will win,
but this challenge? I'll take with a grin!
With a gauntlet thrown down,
and a chance at renown,
Doc calls Fool of a Took, Peregrin!

(and do I get bonus points for double-geek melding LOTR and Pokemon?!?)
Proud father of G-minor and the Bean!

Well, I missed it... but I may still be back with a limerick... just as soon as I think one up. :P
