Beyond The Written Word ~ Part 3A 10-23-07

Post by Dínelleth » Tue Oct 23, 2007 9:31 am

Since it would be cruel and unusual punishment on my part to make you all wait any longer I will post what I've written so far. :-)

Beyond The Written Word ~ Part 3A

After breakfast the next morning Dillon was surprised when Madam Pomfrey gave him his backpack containing his clothes that Mrs. Weasley had brought with her yesterday while he was being moved to the hospital ward after Professor Dumbledore and Mr. Weasley had brought him safely back down to the ground.

“You didn’t think you would be lounging around in bed all day did you?” she asked when she saw his surprised look.

“Well…um…no,” Dillon replied before he took his backpack behind the white cloth screen on rollers that Madam Pomfrey had rolled over to his bed. And when he emerged dressed from behind it a few minutes later he saw that the nurse had his bed made already. But she was no where in sight and this made him feel utterly alone for the moment. So he set his backpack down on the bed before he wandered over to one of the huge windows in the opposite wall. There he stood for a few minutes while he looked out at the dark and rainy landscape beyond. Then he sighed. Physically he was rested but mentally he still was suffering from the lingering fright left over from his ride on the rug. “I wish I was free of this rogue joke magic forever!” he said out loud in frustration to his reflection in the rain spattered window pane.

Suddenly a white misty twin of himself stepped out of the right side of his body while he continued to look at his reflection in the window pane. Now this caused him to quickly spin around and he stared at it in wide eyed amazement while his twin winked at him. Then it slowly floated up toward the high ceiling like a balloon where it suddenly exploded with a loud popping sound into many smaller orbs of golden light which quickly formed into a large W before they slowly faded away.

Now this left Dillon feeling both stunned and relieved at the same time. So when Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and the Weasley twins ran into the ward all with worried looks on their faces he smiled at them reassuringly before telling them what had happened with the rogue joke magic after he had made his wish.

“Wahoo!” Fred suddenly let out loudly while a grinning George slapped him happily on the back so hard that it nearly knocked him over.

“You’re free Dillon!” he said while steadying the young man. “Fred and I had put that W in to signal the end of it!”

After that there followed a round of joyous hugs and more back slaps which soon had Dillon looking rumpled and a bit beat up but he didn’t care. He was free and that was all that matter. Then he gave the twins a perplexed look. “If it only took a simple wish to rid me of the rogue joke magic then why didn’t you tell me earlier?” he asked.

“That was no simple wish you made Dillon! That had to be a Wizard’s Wish! It’s the only type of wish that actually works,” George said while Fred nodded in agreement.

“And since having the ability to do a Wizard’s Wish is a very rare talent it never occurred to us to ask you to give it a try,” Fred added.

“What is this about a Wizard’s Wish?” Professor Dumbledore asked as he and Madam Pomfrey joined the group.

So Dillon told them what he had done earlier to make the rogue joke magic go away and how it did just that.

“It would appear Dillon that you do possess that rare talent. But I must caution you to not rely on it for it’s a fickle form of magic and may not work for you again despite it doing so this time,” Dumbledore warned with a stern look.

“I promise that I won’t,” Dillon replied earnestly.

“Good! Now you have another thing in common with Harry. He too has this talent and from what I’ve heard tell that to this day Mr. Draco Malfoy hasn’t been able to eat spaghetti because of it,” the wizard added while his eyes twinkled with amusement.

“I wished that the spaghetti in his mouth would turn into earthworms after Ron had coughed up all those slugs when we all were second year students,” Harry explained with a big grin when Dillon had looked at him questioningly.

“It was a priceless moment seeing his face turn green before he spewed like I did with the slugs,” Ron said with a smile of satisfaction.

“But why did J. K. Rowling only write about the slugs?” Dillon asked.

“Supposedly Malfoy’s father had threatened Mrs. Rowling that if she included it he would see to it that she would never write anything again,” Hermione said with a look of disgust on her face.

“While it was true that Lucius Malfoy was quite vocal against having that and most of what had transpired between his family and Lord Voldemort revealed he never threatened her,” Dumbledore gently corrected. “Now I believe the time has come for you, Harry, and the Weasley’s here to give Dillon the grand tour of Hogwarts since there is no reason for him to stay in Madam Pomfrey’s hospital ward any longer.”

Beyond The Written Word ~ Part 3B

So Dillon found himself surrounded like a celebrity while each of his friends eagerly suggested all the places he should be shown first as they escorted him out into the corridor. Now this led to a minor argument breaking out amongst them until he asked if he could see the Gryffindor common room first which surprisingly no one had mentioned yet. After that the happy mood quickly returned and soon Dillon found himself standing in the comfortable room once he had let the portrait of the Pink Lady get a good look at him and Harry while they had stood side by side before her.

“This is way bigger then I had imagined or what had been shown in the movies!” he said in awe while he looked about him. Then he had to blink and look away from one of the windows when there was a brilliant flash of lightning. “Looks like the weather will be too nasty for me to see the Quidditch field too.”

“We have much more of the castle to explore so by the time we’re done with that the rain could be over with,” Harry said before he hesitated as if he had more to say but wasn’t sure how to say it.

“Is something wrong?” Dillon asked.

“I was going to ask if you wanted to try riding my broom which I still have here around the field. But after the rug incident I wasn’t so sure if you wanted to leave the ground again.”

“I would be mad to pass up on an opportunity like that!” Dillon exclaimed excitedly.

Now this had Fred and George looking at one another and nodded to each other while grinning like everyone else in response to Dillon’s enthusiasm. “And if you like to fly that way then we will buy you a broom Dillon,” Fred said as he and George turned their attention back to the shocked looking young man.

“You don’t have to do that!” Dillon said quickly.

“We want to as a way to make up for all the angst our rogue joke magic created for you,” George replied earnestly. “And a wand too now that you’ve discovered you’re a wizard.”

“Nor will we take no for an answer!” Fred said firmly when Dillon started to protest again.

Seeing how he wasn’t going to change the twin’s mind Dillon gave in although he still felt that it wasn’t necessary. After that he enjoyed listening to everyone as they reminisced about all the good times they had had in the room. However Dillon did noticed that no one had mentioned the times that Sirius had appeared in the fire place to Harry and that the famous young wizard would look at it wistfully from time to time. So while he and Harry were waiting for their turn to file back through the round hole in the wall he quietly asked his fellow wizard “Sirius really did die didn’t he?”

“Yes he did. But how did you know?”

“I figured it out when no one mentioned his appearances in the fireplace over there and from the way you kept looking at it. I’m sorry Harry. I had hoped that Sirius’s death had also been a work of fiction,” Dillon said with a sad smile.

“As do I. Then he could have seen me bringing an end to Lord Voldemort,” Harry replied back wistfully while looking at the fire place again.

Now Dillon didn’t know what to say that would comfort his friend so he simply placed a hand on Harry’s shoulder as a gesture of support which soon had the famous young wizard smiling back.

After that the two young men caught up with the others out in the corridor. Then as a group they headed for the closest classroom which was Professor Flitwick’s. Once inside Dillon levitated a white feather for the professor while using Harry’s wand after he had been introduced to the tiny little wizard by Harry who had also mentioned then that Dillon was a budding new wizard.

“Well done! I do believe you’ve surpassed Miss Granger in the wrist action,” he said with a pleased smile which dimmed Hermione’s and had Ron grinning from ear to ear now that he had something to use against her if she teased him again about his earlier attempts at doing magic with his wand.

“Cloning yourself Potter so you can now claim twice the fame?” Professor Snape drawled in a cold tone of voice while he joined the group who had been standing all this time by Professor Flitwick’s podium up at the front of the classroom. Then he looked at Dillon as if he was examining something distasteful.

“You know full well that I’m not cloning myself professor!” Harry said angrily with a frown.

“Perhaps but you do seem to have this uncanny ability to do things that most of us can not,” Snape almost snarled back.

“Professor Snape I take it from your presence that you’ve finished the potion I had asked for,” Professor Flitwick quickly said in an effort to change the subject.

“Yes I have. One drop of this in each book will eliminate your bookworm infestation,” Snape explained while he gave the tiny little wizard a smile of satisfaction before he handed over the small glass stopper bottle he had been carrying in his robe pocket.

“I’m sure it will!” Flitwick said happily. “I thank you for your help!”

Suddenly Dillon let out a yelp when he felt something with many sharp little teeth bite him on the side of his hand and while he jerked it away he saw that his attacker was a large warty and bloated gray worm with a toothy maw and no eyes hanging partially out of a huge leather bound book that was midway down a stack of books he had been standing next to.

Instantly Professor Flitwick had his wand out and soon the bookworm was nothing more then harmless dust floating down to the floor. “I’m so sorry about that Dillon,” he squeaked while he used his wand to heal up the now slowly bleeding bite. “Nasty creatures these bookworms but fortunately they’re not poisonous.”

“Yes it’s most fortunate,” Snape agreed although Dillon got the impression that the man was thinking otherwise by his almost sneering smile. And judging from the frowns on his friend’s faces they too had picked up on it and were not pleased by it either. “Especially since he has already suffered through magic that is a joke which is common place in the Weasley family,” Snape added this time he didn’t hide his contempt.

For a moment after that Dillon thought a fight was about to break out when everyone around him stiffened with unspoken anger. Then Professor Flitwick once again changed the subject by saying that he really needed to get busy and take care of his bookworm problem. Now this reduced the tension some and soon Professor Snape was heading out the door after giving the younger folk a parting sneer. And once he was gone Dillon thanked the tiny little wizard for healing him before he left with the Weasley’s, Harry, and Hermione as they continued on with their tour of Hogwarts.

“I see Professor Snape is alive and well,” he said a bit sarcastically.

“Yes he sure is. But don’t mind him!” Harry replied clearly worried that Dillon would.

“Don’t worry I won’t! How did Snape manage to still be alive?” Dillon asked as they all walked down the corridor.

“As you know in the last book Lord Voldemort wanted Nagini to kill him by biting him. But her bite on his neck wasn’t a fatal one due to the high stiff collar on his shirt which prevented her short fangs from going in deep. And since Snape did such a superb job of acting like they had he had her fooled as well as Voldemort.”

“So you were there like J.K. Rowling had written?”

“Yes I was. And the stuff that I learned in the Pensieve about him and my mother was a creation of mine and hers since Snape wasn’t cooperative in telling her anymore about his relationship with my mother. Apparently it was such a trying interview for her that she wrote about him dying instead just to get back at him.”

Now Dillon looked confused. “But where did you get the idea that he had feelings for you mother when they were younger?”

“It wasn’t all that hard to piece together after I had learned from Dumbledore that their Patronuses were the same. Fortunately my mother didn’t have the same feeling for Snape,” Harry replied with a look of relief.

Beyond The Written Word ~ Part 3C 11-18-07

Beyond The Written Word ~ Part 3C

Suddenly a brilliant flash of lighting coming in through the tall row of windows in the outside wall of the corridor startled them all and the loud rumble of thunder which followed soon after made them flinch.

“That was close. I wonder if the lightning struck Hogwarts,” Dillon mused while they all went over to the windows to look out.

“It can’t because of the magical charms placed on it. I’ll lend you my copy of “Hogwarts, A History” so you can read all about it,” Hermione replied. “As a matter of fact you will need all the books if you’re going to learn to be a wizard Dillon.”

“We can get those for you too after visiting Ollivander’s for your wand,” George said firmly when he saw Dillon about to protest that their buying him things wasn’t necessary to make up for what their rogue joke magic had done to him.

“It looks like a monsoon out there,” Ginny said while she watched as the heavy sheets of now wind driven rain pelted Hogwarts and the country side around it.

“Hopefully this rain will let up before we go to Diagon Alley. I hate traveling through really wet floos. It makes the soot stick more to you,” Fred explained with a grimace.

“Maybe we shouldn’t even use the floos. After all Dillon hasn’t traveled by them and we don’t want him ending up some place else like Harry did on his first time,” Ginny reminded then all which made Harry look a bit embarrassed.

“How I could mess up saying Diagon Alley I don’t know,” he said with a shrug.

“But how else are we going to get to the alley? It’s too far for brooms assuming the rain stops,” Hermione pointed out. “And the train isn’t running now either I believe.”

“I’m willing to give the floos a try,” Dillon offered as a way to make his friends getting him there easier although he still felt it wasn’t necessary to be going there at all.

Suddenly this earned him a slap on the back from a smiling Fred which startled him and nearly shoved him into Harry. “That’s the spirit! Now who is up for some lunch? It’s almost noon time and I’m starving!”

As it turned out everyone else was hungry as well so they began to troop down towards the Great Hall while showing along the way more of Hogwarts to Dillon. And it was also during this time that he met some interesting characters in the paintings that hung everywhere.

“Oh how delightful! We have another Harry!” one lovely blonde haired medieval lady in waiting with green eyes said happily while smiling at him.

“Um…no…not really,” Dillon stammered back. “I just look like him is all.”

“I say now! Are you for real?” a pudgy English man dressed in a Victoria era top hat and tails asked from the next painting while he bent forward and looked at Dillon through his monocle as if he were examining a bug through a magnifying glass.

“Yes…I’m real,” was all Dillon could think to say to such an absurd question.

Eventually he came to a painting of an equally lovely dark haired woman reclining back on a chaise lounge while wearing a long red dress the bodice of which was so tight that her bosom looked about ready to pop out of it. Suffice it to say she had Dillon’s undivided attention.

“And who have we here? Why it’s a handsome gentleman caller!” the woman purred with a come hither look to her smile and her dark brown eyes which Dillon found hard to resist. So he took a step closer towards the painting his eyes now taking on a look as if he were love struck.

Suddenly a frowning Hermione and Ginny were each taking one of his arms and dragging him away from the painting and towards everyone else who was now waiting at the top of the stairs that led down to Hogwart’s main entrance hall. “Ignore her Dillon!” Hermione said with a look of disgust towards the woman in red who stuck out her tongue at the younger woman. “She’s got nothing you want.”

“I’m not so sure about that!” he replied in an almost mesmerized tone of voice before he snapped out of it. Then he turned beet red when he realized what he had just said and how he had been acting.

“Don’t worry Dillon! You’re not the first male to fall under The Lady in Red’s spell,” George said with a big grin. “Ron had his lips pressed so tight to her that they could hardly free him.”

“I did not!” Ron exclaimed while he also turned a beet red which proved otherwise.

“I honestly don’t know why Dumbledore allows that disgusting painting to be hung in Hogwarts. It clearly isn’t a fit one to be around the male students,” Hermione said with a scowl while she looked at Ron whose ears by now were just as red as his face.

“Blimey Hermione you can’t be that dense to not know the reason for its presence!” Fred said with a mischievous wink to everyone else.

“And I suppose you do?” she asked him with a suspicious look on her face while she placed her hands on her hips.

“Of course! It’s because Dumbledore…”

However before Fred could finish the tall tale he had just invented to tease Hermione with Hogwart’s double front doors below them suddenly blew wide open and made a loud banging sound that rang as they hit the walls on either side of the entrance. Then a cloaked Hagrid entered along with much wind whipped rain which made him quickly turn around and close the doors. After that he spied everyone up at the top of the stairs but he didn’t see Dillon because the twins had swiftly moved in front of him so as to hide him. Now this surprised him and he was about to ask them why they had done that when George turned slightly and whispered over his shoulder “We want to spring you on Hagrid. We had planned on doing this while you were busy with the Lady in Red.”

“Now what are all of you doing here? Its summer and you should be out having fun or as much fun as this weather will allow anyway,” Hagrid said since he had been away visiting Gwarp and didn’t know a thing about the rogue joke magic and Dillon.

“We have someone we want you to meet Hagrid,” Harry began to introduce with a big smile before a similar smiling Fred and George stepped to either side of Dillon so that he was now in full view of the half-giant. “This here is Dillon Anderson a friend we’ve made through a rather unusual occurrence that I will let the twins tell you about. Dillon you of course know Hagrid and he is like the Hagrid in the books.”

“Hello,” Dillon said tentatively to the Keeper of the Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts since he was taken aback by the look of total shock coming back at him. Normally all anyone ever did while meeting him for the first time was to just stare out of curiosity.

“Blimey Harry he could be your twin!” Hagrid was finally able to exclaim although he still continued to look in shock at Dillon which was making the young man feel uncomfortable for it gave him the impression that Hagrid’s eyes were now somehow riveted permanently on him.

“And he’s a wizard too!” Ron chimed in while he and everyone else now quickly descended the stairs so they could gather around the half-giant.

“I’m not much of one. I only know one spell,” Dillon quickly said lest Hagrid think him fully a wizard. “I only found out the night before last that I could even do that!”

“Blimey!” was all Hagrid could say to that his look of shock now turning into one of surprise.

After that everyone but Dillon took turns in giving Hagrid a quick run down of events that had led him to now being at Hogwarts which had the half-giant saying “Blimey!” every now and then during it as well while they headed into the Great Hall for lunch which was minus its enchanted ceiling due to the wildness of the outside sky.

“One storm of this magnitude is enough during our meal,” Professor Dumbledore had explained in response to Hermione’s question after he had greeted them all warmly from his seat at the head of the single long table now present in the middle of the hall. With him was Professor McGonagall on his right and Professors Flitwick and a frowning Snape on his left. “And I hope your visit with your brother was better then this weather,” he added to Hagrid.

“It definitely was Sir! And Gwarp is much happier in that cave you told me about then out in the Forbidden Forest,” Hagrid said with a big smile.

“That’s not surprising since he’s a giant and more accustom to living in such surroundings,” Snape softly snorted now with a smirk on his face.

“Splendid!” a pleased Dumbledore exclaimed while he ignored Snape’s remark. “Now everyone come and enjoy this fine lunch before it grows cold!”

Meanwhile Dillon’s eyes had grown wide in amazement while he had been watching the variety of delicious looking and smelling food magically appear on the table which included much to his surprise creamy peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches made from white bread which was his favorite. Then he gave a bit of a start when Harry touched him on the arm to get his attention away from the food so he would follow the famous young wizard over to his seat next to a smiling Professor McGonagall. After that Harry sat down next to him with Ginny next to him and then Hermione. Across from them were Snape, Flitwick, Hagrid, the twins, and finally Ron.

Soon everyone was passing the various dishes around to one another although the plate of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches stayed in front of Dillon. “Those are meant for you only,” Dumbledore said with a merry twinkle in his eye.

“Thank you Professor for having them made for me but how did you know that I liked them? I’ve never said a word that I did,” Dillon asked clearly confused.

“Oh a little bird told me,” was all the august wizard would say on the subject before he changed it to what Dillon’s impression of Hogwarts was.

“It’s fantastic! And way bigger then I had imagined it to be. None of the schools I’ve been in can hold a candle to it. I would have enjoyed going to school here!” Dillon said enthusiastically the latter part making Snape snort.

“Thank goodness that will never happen. Who knows what chaos that would have unleashed if there were two Harry Potter’s roaming around here whenever they felt like it,” the Professor said in a contempt filled reference to Harry’s sometimes disregard for school rules concerning when and where students should be.

“Oh for crying out loud! Give it a rest will you!” Dillon suddenly said in an angry tone of voice which took everyone by surprise. “Look I know that Harry’s father bullied you about while the two of you attended Hogwarts and while I feel his behavior wasn’t right at all it’s time for you to quit dwelling on something you can’t change by verbally bullying Harry and move on!”

“Oh and who are you to tell me what I can and cannot do?” Snape asked in a quiet voice that barely hid his own anger. “You no doubt basked in all kinds of wonderful attention from your school mates.”

“Actually I didn’t. There were those who didn’t like Harry’s story and often let me know how much they didn’t by ganging up on me to the point where I spent so much time in a hospital recovering during my last year in school that I almost didn’t graduate in time. Now if I remember correctly James Potter never physically hurt you so if anyone here has a right to carry a grudge then it would be me since I suffered more then you. But that would be pointless like I said for the past can’t be changed and dwelling on it would just keep me a victim of it. And that’s something I don’t want to keep being for life is too short,” Dillon said firmly his eyes never leaving Snape’s who looked stunned by the young man’s words as did everyone else.

For several minutes the only sound in the Great Hall was that of the storm lashing at the widows with its wind driven rain. Then a clearly upset Harry asked softly “How badly beaten were you because of me?”

“The last time was the worse for my assailants had used base ball bats which are longer and slightly thicker then the bats that are used to keep the Bludgers at bay in Quidditch. According to the doctors they had very little hope then that I would live since I had so many internal injuries to vital organs. But I did and here I am. As for my attackers they were rounded up and because of some fancy defending from their lawyers they got little or no jail time. Now Harry don’t you dare start thinking that this is somehow your fault because it isn’t!”

“Still if my story hadn’t been written…”

“Then no one would have learned of it and that would’ve been a greater shame,” Dillon said with a reassuring smile while Professor McGonagall, Hermione, and Ginny wiped their tearing eyes and everyone else shifted as if they were uncomfortable in their seats except for Snape. He sat still his face now the perfect one for a game of poker since it gave no hint as to what his thoughts were.

“Does nothing dampen your spirits?” a now smiling Harry asked.

“Actually there is and it’s this rain. I so want to see the Quidditch field and try out your broom.”

“I’m afraid that won’t be possible even if this rain suddenly stops,” Hagrid said after he had blown his nose in his napkin sized hankie since he had been moved to tears too by Dillon’s story. “The Quidditch field is flooded and I think some giant flesh eating leaches have taken up residence there. I’m going to have a devil of a time getting rid of them.”

“Don’t you go about it alone Hagrid. When the time comes let myself and the other Professors know so you have some back up just in case,” Professor Dumbledore advised.

“I will certainly do that Professor.”
