I just came across this while reading last night - eagles! From The Hobbit chapter "Out of the Frying-Pan and Into the Fire":
Eagles are not kindly birds. Some are cowardly and cruel. But the ancient race of the northern mountains were the greatest of all birds; they were proud and strong and noble-hearted.

Haha I just read that part!!! That would be the Arkenstone.
"It was like a globe with a thousand faces; it shone like silver in the firelight, like water in the sun, like snow under the stars, like rain upon the Moon!"
What smells keener than goblins and does not need to see you to catch you?

Time, time! Oh wait, that's a different riddle ;-).

Well, that could describe the Nazgul, but somehow I doubt it's that. I'll have to do some digging!

I'm so sure I read this recently! Except ... I've re-read a lot recently. Hmm.

I knew I'd read this recently! From the same chapter. I was thinking orcs though, and had been focusing on those particular scenes until I came across this last night:
Wolves of that sort smell keener than goblins, and do not need to see you to catch you!

"What shall we do?" [Bilbo] cried. "Escaping goblins to be caught by wolves!" he said, and it became a proverb, though now we say "out of the frying-pan into the fire" in the same sort of uncomfortable situations.

Don't ever get stomach flu, y'all. So not fun.

What's described as being cold as ice, harder than steel, and shines like moonlit silver?

That was me! I said that just 3 days ago! OK, so now I have to find one...

Oh, I guess that's not from Tolkien's works. Hmmm... you meant the 'moonlit silver' thingy, huh? Guess I'll hunt that one down then ;-).

I hope you feel better soon! (((Munchkin)))

I think I know it, though I do not have time at the moment to find the exact quote. I'll let this stew a while

I'm glad you have an idea, Wanderer - I wasn't sure if this quote be too easy or too hard. If I'd included any more of the description I thought it would have been a dead giveaway...

Well, it's been a while, so I'll just answer.
You would be referencing the mithril shirt that Thorin gave to Bilbo who gave it to Frodo.
Fellowship of the Ring, Book 2, Chapter 3, page 332 in my copy.
I can type out the whole quote if you'd like =D

Congrats, Wanderer! 8) (To be honest, last night I was looking at this and realized I hadn't bookmarked the page in my book. Glad someone found it, heh).
